Dr Nigel Strauss
Dr Strauss has been a psychiatrist for nearly 40 years. He is the author of 'The Asylum Seekers' , a deep and purposeful fiction book based on his experience and expertise in the area of return soldiers, post-traumatic stress and the psychological impact of those who find themselves geographically and existentially displaced.
His special area of interest has been medico legal work and in particular the process of traumatisation and hence post traumatic stress.
He has been a member of the Medical Panels, and a consultant to the Victorian Workcover Authority, the TAC and the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is a co-author of the Psychiatric Impairment Guides – the GEPIC– used in Victoria and South Australia. He is the Medical Director of both the Millswyn Clinic, a private outpatient psychiatric facility in South Yarra, and Occupational Psychiatry P/L, an organization that integrates psychiatry into the workplace and the community.
Dr Strauss is an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University in the Department of Koorie Education with a special interest in cultural traumatisation and lateral violence.
He also has a special interest in promoting research in Australia into the possible benefits of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs as adjuncts in the psychotherapeutic treatment of conditions such as post traumatic stress and end of life anxiety.
